Audouin's Gulls (Larus audouinii) in Spain

Jeremy Barker generously provided this picture of various Mediterranean species, including the much sought after Audouin's Gulls (Larus audouinii). The picture was taken in southern Spain during April 1998.

Figure 1. The birds in the foreground, including the bird with its wings raised are all Audouin's Gull. Also present are a number of Mediterranean Gulls (the small ones) and Yellow-legged Gulls (darker mantled than Audouin's).

Figure 2. Detail of two Audouin's Gulls. Notice the elegant head shape, rather heavy dark red bill, and dark eye. The dark secondary bar and dark mottling to the primary coverts indicates a second calander year bird.

Figure 3. Detail of an adult Yellow-legged Gull (L. michahellis) with a sub-adult (2nd summer?) Mediterranean Gull (L. melanocephalus) to its right.
